Season is over and school is nearly out. May and June are often some of the busiest months of the year for residential sales. Families relocating into the area look to purchase a home now so that they can move the kids down over the summer and get them settled before the new school year starts.
Last week a client asked me to recommend the best school district in Sarasota, as she wanted to make sure that she bought in the “right” area. When people ask me that I tend to follow up with a series of questions to find out about the children, what they enjoy, what ages they are, how they will be getting to school. The short answer to the question is that you can’t go too far wrong in Sarasota County. According toniche.com, Sarasota ranks 4th overall out of 67 Florida school districts.* It is considered one of the best school districts for teachers, and one of the high schools is ranked first in Florida and 13th in the country.

The long answer is that there is something for everyone here. We have one child in elementary, one in middle and one in high school so we pretty much cover the gamut. There are lots of options outside the regular district public schools: charter schools, magnet schools, special needs, virtual schools, gifted, military academies, schools with an emphasis on the arts, others focused on the STEM curriculum. And of course we have some top notch private schools in the area too. I always encourage families to keep an open mind about public school districts. If they can’t afford a home in the district they’d prefer, then we look into cluster bus stops options at local schools in more affordable areas, or nearby charter schools.

Market Report March 2017
- 2.6 percent increase in number of single family homes sales
- 13.5 percent increase in number of condo sales
- Cash sales down 13 percent on March 2016
- Inventory of single family homes up 13 percent on same period last year
- Inventory of condos up 18 percent on last year
- $150,000-$400,000 price range is the most robust in terms of sales
- 67.8 percent increase in new listings between $600,000 and $999,999 over March 2016
- Median time to contract is up by 65 percent (usually attributed to longer closing times and/or declining number of cash sales)
- 5.7 percent less sales of $1m+ properties compared to March 2016.
