Sarasota did a mighty fine job of showing off to our record number of visitors (77,500 in February alone!). It didn’t hurt that Siesta Key was named the No. 1 beach in the country on Tripadvisor.com’s 2015 Traveler’s Choice Awards. These accolades keep on coming because there is so much new stuff going on here: the inaugural Sarasota Music Half Marathon – 1,700 runners, 16 bands, a beer mile; it had it all! There are new businesses popping up downtown – SiftBakehouse, Mandeville beer garden, Fyzical, Alex and Ani, to name but a few. Our newest art museum, Sarasota Museum of Art, is underway at the former Sarasota High School building. And it is hard not to notice the changing skyline. Seven out of twenty planned construction projects totaling $350m are underway to create a total of 1,143 new luxury hotel rooms and 2,237 new high end condo units. It is particularly encouraging that the growth is not entirely focused on catering to visitors and wealthier residents however; the Rosemary District development just north of downtown Sarasota has slated 450 rental apartment homes, 32 townhomes and 30,000 square feet of retail and office space, which will lie within walking distance of Main Street. The Murray Group has its own exciting new projects going on. Watch this space…! |
